Announcing the New River Valley Triathlon

When the schedule for the Virginia Triathlon Series 2009 is posted online on December 1, 2008, first-timers and veteran triathletes alike will have a new venue to consider:  the New River Valley Triathlon.

On July 12, 2009, at 7:00 AM Sunday, October 11, 2009, at 8:00 AM, the inaugural New River Valley Triathlon will commence at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center, a brand new, state-of-the-art, Olympic-caliber pool complex.  The only sprint triathlon in Southwest Virginia, the inaugural New River Valley Triathlon offers a time trial challenge for seasoned triathletes and an inviting, exciting course for first-timers.

What is a sprint triathlon?  Participants swim, bike, and run, just like in an Ironman event, but for much shorter distances.  After a 400-meter swim in the 50-meter Olympic pool at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center, race participants will cycle a 13-mile out-and-back route, primarily on a rolling road in a rural, residential area.  The 5K run is  a loop near the Christiansburg Aquatic Center on residential streets.

When triathletes cross the finish line, whether first or last, they’ll hear cheering crowds and their names announced over the loudspeaker by Set Up Events, Inc., the triathlon production company directing the event.

In addition to individual participants, the New River Valley Triathlon welcomes relay teams of friends, families, and organizations.  Someone who swims, someone who bikes, and someone who runs—that’s a triathlon relay team.

Companies are urged to compete for the Valley Cup Trophy, awarded to the corporate relay team finishing the race first.  The Valley Cup Trophy will be on display in the office of the winning company until next year’s race.

Online registration for the Virginia Triathlon Series, including the inaugural New River Valley Triathlon, will begin on Tuesday, January 6, 2009, at 7:00 PM at www.setupevents.com.  Some Virginia triathlons fill within an hour so those interested are urged to monitor the Set Up Events/Virginia Triathlon Series site and the New River Valley Triathlon site for the latest updates (www.newrivervalleytriathlon.com).
