Start training!  See Tri Links for ideas.

Read the training blog of a triathlete.

Here's the only Virginia blog this list maker could find by search engine:  Triathlon Training Blog:  My Journey from Couch Potato to Triathlete.

If you're training locally and keeping a blog, e-mail anne@handshake20.com and we'll list it on the site.

If you're training locally and not keeping a blog, consider starting one.  E-mail anne@handshake20.com with your blog's Web site address and we'll list it on the site.

Discover pre-event opportunities to train and practice swimming, biking, and running through the New River Valley's Multi-Sport organizations listed in Tri Links.

Check out Tri Links for some of the best sites on triathlons.

Consider hiring a coach. Here are USA Triathlon certified coaches in our area (in alphabetical order by last name):

  • Jim McGehee
  • Kelly McPherson
  • Anne Jones Thompson

Read Ten Tips for the Beginner Triathlete by triathlon coach Anne Jones Thompson.

Read triathlon coach Kati Derrick's reflection on training for, and completing, the Louisville Ironman in August, 2007.

Think about attending a triathlon during the early season of 2009 to see what they're like. TriFind maintains calendars of triathlons and links to triathlon resources.

Consider getting started now by finding friends who run, bike, or swim, and try a triathlon as a relay team early in the season. (You might have to drive a ways. See why a triathlon in the New River Valley will be so welcome?)

When the Set Up Events registration period opens (some races fill in under an hour, so watch carefully), register for a race!

And, finally, know you're making the world a better place whether you win or finish or just give it a try, because all proceeds go to a local non-profit organization.
