A review of the list of 460 people signed up for the Reston Sprint Triathlon shows that the youngest is 13 and the oldest is 76.
Participants in triathlons need not be shy about their ages. The number is inked at the Marking Station in black magic marker on the back of each participant's calf.
Of the 460 people, 20 women are in the category of ages 50-54.
Why am I interested in the number of competitors that age? Because I signed up. If I'm going to organize a triathlon and encourage others to particpate, I may need to have done one.
I will participate on a relay team in April in the Angels Triathlon with friends, one a swimmer, 45, and the other a cylist, 63. I am doing the last leg, the 5K run. In Reston, on June 1, I will do my first full triathlon and give all three events a go by myself. If you're interested, I'm keeping a blog about my experiences. If you keep a blog about your triathlon training, contact me and I'll list it on the site.
I would like to make it very clear that I am chronologically 49 years old but that, according to the triathlon rules cut-off date, I am 50. I just want that to be very clear.
So who does triathlons? Young and old. And everyone who is doing a second triathlon or a hundredth triathlon had a first one. Maybe the New River Valley Triathlon will be your first. Wanna tri?
